Through The Mist

You lead me on the path, keep showing me the way

I feel a little lost, a little strange today
I think I'll take a hold of whatever comes my way
Then we'll see what happens, take it day by day

I thought I had it all, I had it all worked out
Just what my future held that there would be no doubt
But then the card came up and I took another turn
But I don't know if it's fulfillment that I yearn

Tell me what you can hear and then tell me what you see
Everybody has a different way to view the world
I would like you to know, when you see the simple things
To appreciate this life it's not too late to learn

(Iron Maiden – Different World – Steve Harris / Adrian Smith)

Imagine being told suddenly that the life you had been living for over 40 years was gone. Overnight things were different. No longer able to see clearly where your life was going, surrounded by a storm. Darkness with flashes of light. Fog, sometimes so thick you were straining to make something out in the distance.

Wandering, not knowing where you were going or what your destination was.

I was diagnosed suddenly with kidney failure in the fall of 2014. I literally started dialysis within 24 hours. After 4 years of declining health, I had accepted death. A month later I received a second chance at life in the form of a deceased donor kidney transplant.

As I was recovering, I realized I saw the world in a whole new way than I did previously.

Through the Mist is a series that when I started creating it, I wasn’t sure why. All I knew was that I had to do it. Driven to capture those glimpses of life visible through the mist, haze, cloud… It was exactly how I was feeling.

I need to show the world what I am now able to understand and see through my wide-open eyes. My journey from the dark back to the light. Realizing I need to let the feelings out instead of keeping them locked inside. It’s ok to be emotional. It is ok to have difficulties and let others around you know that. Even in the darkest hour there is a light somewhere and hopefully that will pull you through.

As you go through this series of images, take the time to stare into the clouds. Shapes and shadows in the fog. What do you see through the mist?
